Within the traditional “faculty–discipline” framework, disciplinary segmentation and the limitations of both discipline clusters and university-level interdisciplinary centers have hindered progress in large-scale academic integration. In response, leading research universities in China are leveraging major policy opportunities to explore new models of cross-disciplinary development. Anchored in national strategic priorities, some institutions have taken the lead in establishing interdisciplinary hubs built around dynamic “academic domains” within newly designed physical spaces. These initiatives seek to balance the stability of academic sectors with the adaptability of domains, empowering grassroots academic units to engage in innovative, cross-domain exploration. This marks the emergence of a new paradigm—enabling wide-ranging interdisciplinary collaboration and shaping the next generation of national scientific and technological capabilities. At the same time, universities are systematically transforming educational models to break down disciplinary boundaries, foster integration, and encourage collaborative innovation—laying the foundation for boundary-crossing creativity in research and design.
